Call me by your name

Call Me by Your Name (2017) directed by Luca Guadagnino is one of the most longed movies of this award season. Set in Northern Italy in 1983, Call Me by Your Name narrates the love story between Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a 17-year-old half italian, half french and his father's American assistant, Oliver (Armie Hammer).
The movie absorbes you with its vintage allure, whilst the days pass by under the beautiful italian sun. It is summer time, when the young Elio shares his spare time with an uncommon friend. I enjoyed the setting, the soft & slow narration, the pastel colours, the taste of the sweet appricots. Everything is armonic as only can be in an Italian environment.
The 22 yo Timothée Chalamet is superb. Natural, naive, predictable in his characters shoes. He deliveres, in my opinion, one of the best performance of the year.
Armie Hammer is perfectly in the mood of the “superstar” american. The nomination for best supporting actor is really hot.
Call Me By Your Name deals with the these- days fashionable theme of homosexuality (after the acclaimed “Carol” and last year’s winner “Moonlight”): in the first half of the movie, the issue is quite silent, whereas he explodes in the second half. Did I enjoy the outcome of Elio and Oliver’s relationship? Actually, no. Too much unjustified sex scenes that, in my view, in the long term have destroyed the initial nice-to-watch platonic relationship.

Movie rating: 4/5.
Let’s see what comes from the Golden Globes and, of course, the Oscars.
